Decision Science and Decision Support

GEAR Imagery used for Post-Katrina Analysis

Problems requiring decision support are too complex for a single human to interpret. Decision support systems use the power of computation to reduce this complexity by:

  • performing intelligent analysis
  • providing alternative scenarios
  • reducing risk and uncertainty
  • soliciting expert knowledge
  • visualizing data in an intuitive manner

The goal of our decision support research is to help project project administrators, engineers, scientists, and developers in planning-level and reconnaissance-based decisions prior to project execution. To accomplish this, our research seeks to:

  • expand the breadth and depth of information considered
  • improve the accuracy and timeliness of decisions

Several ongoing projects at ITL address decision support, such as Google Earth Animation Technology, Risk and Reliability Studies for Asset Management, and Natural Disaster Support and Emergency Response.
